Member ratings and handicaps
The Pairs ratings are calculated using an Elo-based system taking into account most Pairs events played throughout the year.
The actual rating values do not have any special significance other than giving a relative comparison between members’ recent results. However, they are used to determine members’ handicaps for relevant Pairs events.

Handicaps
The Pairs ratings are used to determine handicaps for Pairs events. The handicaps are updated at the end of every 2-month period (Jan-Feb, Mar-Apr, etc.) The calculation used is: handicap = (700-rating)/25, rounded to 1 decimal place. Some useful translations are as follows:Rating | Handicap | Description |
100 | +24 | Starting Junior |
150 | +22 | Mid Junior |
300 | +16 | Mid Intermediate |
400 | +12 | Intermediate/Senior border |
500 | +8 | Mid Senior |
600 | +4 | Mid Open |
750 | -2 | High Open |
850 | -6 | Top players |
Most players fall into the handicap range -6 to 24. A few will fall outside this range, but will be limited to -7 to 25.
